Learn the waiata for our Third Reading

We will be singing four waiata to celebrate our Third Reading in Parliament on Thursday 6 September.

We encourage you to listen to the songs from now through to Thursday and learn the lyrics so we can all join together in song during our Third Reading celebrations.

The waiata we will be singing are as follows. Click on each song title to listen to the waiata.

Tūtira mai ngā iwi

To be sung before entering Parliament, and after.

Tūtira mai ngā iwi,
tātou tātou e
Tūtira mai ngā iwi,
tātou tātou e

Whai-a te marama-tanga,
me te aroha - e ngā iwi!
Ki-a tapatahi,
Ki-a ko-tahi rā
Tātou tātou e

(Repeat)

Tā-tou tā-tou e E!
Hi aue hei!!

Kotiro Māori

To be sung before entering Parliament, and after.

Kōtiro Māori e, taku ripene pai
O makawe hoki nga ngaru ate tai
Ko te pare huia
He tohu rangatira e
Ko Rongomaiwahine
O Nukutaurua e.

Rongongia tō ataahua
E te whenua katoa
Tae atu te kohimuhimu
Ki a Kahungunu e
Ko wai te wahine e
Whakakapakapa te manawanui?
Ko Rongomaiwahine
O Nukutaurua e

Piki ake, kake ake
Ki Te Mahia e
Ka kite tana hiahia
Aue Ko Rongomai e.
Haere mai e tama rukuhia
Nga pāua a Tangaroa nei
Ma Rongomaiwahine
O Nukutaurua e.

Nāhau rā Kahungunu
Tangata whakanene
Na te pāua
I raru ana koe
Rongomai e
Maranga mai e hine
Ka haere tāua e
Ki Maramatea
O Nukutaurua e.

Ko Te Amorangi

To be sung inside Parliament to support the passing of the settlement.

Ko te Amorangi ki mua,
Ko te hāpao ō ki muri
Te tūturutanga mahipono
O te Māori mana motuhake
He mangopare amohia o te waka Takitimu
Hei whakakuititanga, hei whakakitenga
E rere e te huata hopukia,
E rere e te manuka tomokia
E kore e ngaro te kākano,
I ruiruia mai rā I Rangiātea
E tōku hinengaro anō,
He wā kāinga e hokia ana mai

Ka Waiata a Ruawharo e

Tū mai awa, tū mai moana
Ko koe takahia noatia e au
Tupe au nuku, tupe au rangi
Whati ki runga, whati ki raro, Urumārangaranga,
Pērā hoki rā taku manu-nui nā Tane
Ka tātau atu ki roto o Nuku-ngaere
Mai a whiwhia, mai a rawea, Mai a whakatakaia!
Ka taka te huki rawea
Koro I runga, Koro I raro, Koro I Tāwhirimātea.
Ki kora hoki koe e tū mai ai.
Ka hura te Tamatea nunui,
Ka hura te Tamatea roroa
Te kauaka nuku, te kauaka rangi
Te ai ā-nuku, te ai ā-rangi.
Te kura mai hukihuki, te kawea tetere.
Kawea a-nuku, kawea a tai, Oi!
Tūmata kōkiriritia!
Hoatu waka ki waho, Hoatu waka ki uta,
Ngaruhinga atu, ngaruhinga mai
I runga I te mata wahine, I raro te mata tāne.
Huki nawenawe.
Tēnei te waka ka whakairia
Ko Takitimu te waka e i.
Ko Tamatea Ārikinui te tangata!
