Pae Tapu is a focused initiative supporting whānau and marae across the Wairoa rohe to strengthen their paepae and uphold the mana of local tikanga and kōrero.
The kaupapa responds to concerns raised by the Kaumātua Kaunihera, who identified a growing need to support and grow the number of capable kaikōrero, as many marae rely on only a small group to fulfil these roles.
To better understand the challenges, Te Reo Māori advocate Kiwa Hammond (Wairoa Hōpūpū) undertook interviews with those currently serving on paepae. This was followed by two wānanga hosted at local marae, bringing together experienced speakers and those stepping into the role. These hui created space to share experiences, identify common challenges, and begin shaping a pathway forward.
Across the rohe, a consistent theme has emerged: the need to actively support those already carrying these responsibilities, while also developing the next generation of speakers. With over 30 marae within a 50km radius of Wairoa township, building this capability is essential to sustaining marae life and cultural practice.
An important outcome of the wānanga has been the strengthening of whanaungatanga. Many participants noted the value of coming together, meeting others from across the rohe, and building connections that had not previously existed.
A draft report prepared by Kiwa Hammond is currently in development, with further wānanga planned. This includes an upcoming karanga wānanga at Whakakī Marae. Pae Tapucontinues to evolve as a community-led effort to ensure the strength and continuity of paepae throughout Wairoa.
